Exploring Chengdu for the First Time

Chengdu is one of the largest and most fascinating cities in China. Known as the capital of Sichuan Province, the city is famous for its spicy food, relaxed lifestyle, giant pandas, and unique blend of modern and traditional Chinese culture.

From the moment we arrived in Chengdu, we could immediately feel that this city was different from anywhere else in China. The streets were filled with panda decorations, giant LED screens, modern shopping districts, and traditional Chinese buildings standing beautifully side by side.

It instantly gave us the feeling that Chengdu is a city where old China and modern China perfectly meet.

First Impressions of Chengdu

After arriving by bullet train from Guilin, we checked into our apartment located right in the heart of the city. The location was perfect, surrounded by shopping streets, restaurants, cafes, and busy nightlife.

One thing became obvious immediately — Chengdu absolutely loves pandas.

Everywhere we looked, we saw:

  • Panda backpacks
  • Panda hats
  • Panda statues
  • Panda-themed stores
  • Giant panda decorations climbing shopping malls

It truly feels like the global capital of pandas.

Despite being a huge city, Chengdu felt incredibly clean, organized, and modern. Massive LED billboards lit up the streets while traditional Chinese architecture added cultural charm to the atmosphere.

The city also had a very comfortable and convenient vibe. Public transportation was modern, roads were clean, and everything felt easy to navigate.

Trying Public Transport in Chengdu

For the first time in Chengdu, we decided to take a public bus.

Using the transport system in China is surprisingly simple. We used the same QR code system that works for the metro, and within minutes, we were on the correct bus.

The buses were:

  • Fast
  • Cheap
  • Clean
  • Modern
  • Well organized

The ticket only cost around 2 yuan, making transportation extremely affordable compared to many Western countries.

Eating Famous Sichuan Dandan Noodles

One of the biggest reasons tourists visit Chengdu is the food.

As the capital of Sichuan Province, Chengdu is world-famous for its bold spicy flavors and the legendary mala seasoning — the unique numbing spice created using Sichuan peppercorns.

We visited a famous Michelin-recognized noodle restaurant to try authentic Dandan noodles.

The atmosphere was amazing.

People sat outside on the streets eating noodles while the smell of fresh spices filled the air.

The noodles were topped with:

  • Minced pork
  • Chives
  • Sesame mixture
  • Chili oil
  • Sichuan spices

The flavor was incredible.

The noodles were fresh, spicy, savory, and packed with authentic Sichuan taste.

Surprisingly, a bowl only cost around 10 yuan, which is approximately $1 to $1.50 USD.

We also tried tomato beef noodles, which had a rich but lighter tomato broth with large chunks of beef and tomatoes.

The food quality compared to the price was unbelievable.

Chengdu truly deserves its reputation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.

Chengdu Nightlife and Beer Culture

While walking through the city, we found a modern beer shop with multiple fresh beer taps lined across the wall.

One thing we immediately noticed in China was how safe the country feels.

People comfortably leave:

  • Laptops
  • Phones
  • Bags
  • Personal belongings

on tables while relaxing outside.

That level of safety creates a very relaxed atmosphere throughout the city.

The nightlife in Chengdu feels lively without being chaotic.

The city combines:

  • Bright neon lights
  • Modern shopping malls
  • Stylish cafes
  • Traditional architecture
  • Outdoor dining culture

All together, it creates an atmosphere that feels energetic yet peaceful.

Our Modern Chengdu Hotel

Back at the hotel, we were shocked by how modern and luxurious the apartment was.

The apartment included:

  • Huge living room
  • Two bedrooms
  • Modern kitchen
  • Projector screens
  • Large city-view windows
  • Bathtub
  • Stylish modern design

The best part was the location.

We stayed directly in the center of Chengdu with metro access only seconds away.

Looking out from the 30th floor at night gave us incredible views of the Chengdu skyline.

China continues to impress with the quality of accommodation available at very affordable prices.

Visiting the Chengdu Panda Research Center

The next morning, we woke up early to visit one of Chengdu’s most famous attractions — the Giant Panda Research Center.

This research center focuses on rehabilitating pandas and helping prepare them for life in the wild.

We were told the pandas are most active in the early morning, so arriving early is highly recommended.

The moment we saw our first real panda was unforgettable.

After seeing panda toys and decorations everywhere across Chengdu, finally seeing a real giant panda relaxing peacefully was surreal.

The pandas looked:

  • Lazy
  • Funny
  • Relaxed
  • Adorable

Some were lying on their backs while others slowly climbed trees or ate bamboo.

We also managed to spot red pandas, which are smaller, more active, and extremely cute.

The panda center becomes extremely crowded later in the day, so arriving early is definitely the best strategy.

Relaxing in People’s Park

After visiting the pandas, we explored People’s Park, one of Chengdu’s most famous green spaces.

One surprising thing about Chengdu is how relaxed the lifestyle feels despite being a massive city.

Compared to other major cities, people here seem far less rushed.

The atmosphere inside the park felt calm and peaceful.

Locals were:

  • Walking slowly
  • Relaxing with friends
  • Drinking tea
  • Enjoying nature
  • Exercising

The slower pace of life is one of the reasons many people fall in love with Chengdu.

Why Chengdu Feels Different

Chengdu stands out from many other Chinese cities because it perfectly balances:

  • Modern technology
  • Traditional culture
  • Relaxed lifestyle
  • Incredible food
  • Natural beauty
  • Urban convenience

The city feels futuristic while still maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Whether it’s:

  • Riding modern public transport
  • Eating Michelin-quality noodles for a few dollars
  • Seeing giant pandas
  • Exploring parks
  • Enjoying nightlife

Chengdu offers a complete experience.
